As the Beer Brew Girls, we have many dreams. Two of these dreams are: to upgrade to a new brewing system and give back to our community.

New Automated Brewing System

A dream of the Beer Brew Girls is to brew more beer. Imagine that:)

To allow us to do that, we want to purchase an automated brew system that would allow us to brew 10 – 15 gallons of beer at once. We currently brew 5 gallon batches on our handbuilt all-grain 3 tier stand. We are estimating an average total cost of $10,000 to buy the system and supporting equipment needed to handle the larger batches. We will be asking for a minimal suggested donation at this event to help us reach this goal!

Jill Hikes For Cancer

It wouldnt be fair to ask our community to support us if we didn’t support our community.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Jill Douglas as support for her Ultimate Hike benefiting CureSearch for Children’s Cancer. Jill is our adventerous Beer Brew Girl who has supported and encouraged this group from the very beginning. Although she is not a homebrewer (yet), Jill is usually always working our events which we can not do alone.

So help us help her. On April 21, 2012, Jill will embark on an extreme physical and mental challenge across 26.5 miles of mountain side within North Carolina through rain or shine.  Her goal is to raise at least $2,500 to help find a cure for children’s cancer, the number one cause of death by disease in Children. Info

Deckard’s American Tavern is actually a great undiscovered pub off Ponce De Leon. As it’s owned by owners of Taco Mac, they offer Wednesday Pint nights before Taco Mac’s Thursday Pint nights. While some of us drank lots of home brew and craft beer, “Hops Diva” came this today to learn to brew herself. As a dedicated student, Hops Diva wrote down a lot of notes, took lots of pictures and asked a lot of questions. In speaking with her at the end of the day, she seemed to have learned a tremendous amount of information and seemed excited to learn how to become a home brewer too!

Our initial impression of Ormsby’s is this a great addition to the Atlanta pub and restaurant scene. Located in Westside Atlanta on Marrietta Street, Ormby’s offers a great concept around beer, food and games. This cozy pub has an upstairs and a downstairs that offer different environments. The upstairs provides a quaint cozy atmosphere with simple colors great for relaxing and conversation. Grab a seat and mingle at the long bar or catch up with your friends at a table or booth. Choose from a full bar stocked with great selection of rotating craft beers and bottled beers from local and national breweries along with the domestic beer normal choices to suit everyone’s beer craving and or budget.

Fancy some games along with that pint? Venture down the stairs to enter a totally different pub feel with low ceilings, a louder setting, brick walls, several pool tables located throughout, darts, a free to play wooden shuffle board table with a computerized score system, 2 free private area large Bocce Balls courts, a couple skeeball machines, a pin ball machine and 2 more bars along with more tables and a few booths.

For most of us, this was our first visit to Ormsby’s. We sat at a table downstairs and eventually filled it up with 7 girls. The service was good, we discovered some new beers, ate food and just caught up on our lives. The food was a little greasy but a decent quality for decent prices. The desserts were inexpensively priced at $3. We were not able to try the famous maple sugar cotton candy since the machine was not working. With us attending on a Friday night, the place become very crowded so we did not play any games.

Overall, we were all were pleased with Ormsby’s and would go back. Visit Ormsby’s website here.

4. Sweetwater 420 Fest Cask Ales – SUNDAY, April 17th – Candler Park, Atlanta

The same weekend of our homebrew class is the Annual Sweetwater 420 Festival. This year it’s happening for 3 days: Friday, April 15 – Sunday, April 17th.

We are planning to attend on Sunday from 2pm – 5pm for the Cask Ale tastings. 5 cask ales from the previous Brew Your Cask Off event (happened in March) will be available for sampling for a small cash fee. The sampling selections will include these winning BYCO cask ales: Lika-Titi-Coco Porter from Final Gravity Home, The Sch’it by the Porter Beer Bar, Two Pump Chump from Fontaines and Samhain from Cypress Street Pint & Plate.

Bongo Porter Original Drawing by Hallelujah Truth

Beer Brew Girls own homebrew, Bongo Porter, wins 2 different category awards in the 18th Annual Peach State Brew Off 2011 beer home brew competition! Bongo Porter first win is for the Flight 34, 20 – FRUIT BEER category. The second win is for the Brewer’s Choice award! Bongo Porter is a dark porter beer made with toasted coconut. The coconut flavor is not overpowering but just enough to compliment the flavor the porter base and make you wish you were on an island somewhere going “Bongo”. So far, Bongo Porter has won a total of 3 awards!! The judges seem to really like Bongo!

The Annual Peach State Brew Off beer homebrew competition is sanctioned by the American Homebrew Association (AHA) and is judged using the 2008 BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) Style Guidelines. It’s put on by the Covert Hops Society. The Covert Hops Society is one the oldest homebrew club in Atlanta, Georgia. To see all of the winners of this year’s competition, click here.

How to Pronounce Duvel the Beer

Duvel Belgian Golden Ale

Duvel Belgian Golden Ale is one of my, Kim Wolfe’s, favorites. At 8% alcohol, I could drink this one beer make for the rest of my life and be completely content. From the country of Monks brewing beer, Duvel is a Belgian style golden ale. Like homebrew, it’s bottled conditioned which means it is not artificially carbonated. Most Macro or Craft breweries pasteurize and artificially carbonate their beers. When it’s left to bottle condition, the beer is mixed with priming sugar and put in the bottle to carbonate over time naturally.

Duvel is brought to you by four generations of the Moortgat together pilsner malts bohemian hops and a unique yeast strain to create this intense, aromatic and beguiling ale.

This is a must try if you like Belgian ales!

Port Brewing Mongo India Pale Ale

This is not for the faint beer drinkers. If you like HOPPY, you will like this beer. Port Brewing is a fairly new distribution in Georgia. Brewed and bottled by Port Brewing Company located in San Marcos, CA, Mongo Indian Pale Ale is hoppy with a punch at 8.5% alcohol. The smell gives off the distinctive hop character. The taste gives off a strong hop character and leaves the IPA bitterness on your tongue after the swallow. The bottle doesn’t really say much about the beer itself. Instead has cat surfing on a huge wave and tells a story about Columbus, a gray brewery cat, who eventually earned the name “Mongo”.

This is what it says:

We realize it’s absurd to show a cat surfing on a beer label, but had you met columbus, our gray brewing kitten, you too would have concluded that “Mongo would go…” You see, even though he only spent 8 months wandering around our brewery, columbus earned (and eventually owned) the nickname “Mongo”.

The largest of five kittens, he was summarily bounced from the litter on the second day. Legend has it he was ostracized for being larger than life. It mattered not to him. He quickly spent all nine lives and left behind a enduring legacy. Had he not passed so suddenly, we’re sure he would have paddled out on the heaviest days and marveled us with his nimble footwork at our local breaks.

To commemorate his fleeting existence we created Mongo, an IPA with a resinous, bolder and more robust hop character than a traditional west coast IPA.

This is the tenth year for the Dunwoody Beer Festival which has raised over $227,000 for Camp Twin Lakes. Promising a combination of over 150 beers, malt beverages, and liquors from countries all over the world, this festival is unique in that they provide other alcohol besides beer. So go drink and enjoy live music entertainment at the Dunwoody Beer Festival and support children and young adults of Camp Twin Lakes at the same time.

Beer Brew Girls Terrapin Wake and Bake Inspired Homebrew

Inspired by local Georgia brewery, Terrapin Beer Company, this Beer Brew Girls stout homebrew is a high gravity oatmeal stout infused with coffee flavors. It pours thick and is black in color. Terrapin’s Wake and Bake coffee oatmeal stout is made with Jittery Joe’s Coffee  at 8.6% alcohol. Beer Brew Girls Wake Up Stout was made with a different coffee blend and make and is at 9.3%. Attempt to make this beer and substitute your favorite coffee blend. This is the perfect beer to quench your stout craving plus give you an alcohol buzz and a caffine rush at the same time. February Meetup at The Square Pub

We are meeting at Ormbsy’s in Atlanta on Friday, March 11, 2011. During our February meetup at The Square Pub in Decatur, we all discussed the next place to try out. Some of us have been to Ormsby’s and some of us have not. So that’s where we are headed for this month! With a tagline, “A good place to be”, we have high hopes of the West Atlanta Beer and Food venue as the website promises a good solid variety of beer selections, fun games to play while we drink our beer and good food to keep us somewhat sober while we play and drink. Our local Atlanta brewery, Sweetwater Brewing Company, is hosting yet another great beer, music and art event. The 7th Annual Sweetwater 420 Fest is an yearly beer and art festival centered around education of caring for our planet, mother earth. With an wide variety of live music, activities, food, beer and education, Sweetwater 420 Fest is a great event to bring the entire family, young and old.

With a music lineup that usually goes great with beer, this year’s Sweetwater 420 fest will feature music by: Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead, Galactic, Railroad Earch, 7 Walkers, Dead Confederate, Greensky Bluegrass, Anders Osborne, The Pimps of Joytime, Dejablue Grass Band, the Broadcast, Deep Blue Sun, Rollin’ in the Hay, Gimme Hendrix, the Bitteroots and more.

The beer line up from Sweetwater Brewing Company will include; 420 Extra Pale Ale, Sch’Wheat American Wheat Ale, IPA India Pale Ale, Blue Blueberry Ale, Georgia Brown Ale, and Road Trip. On Sunday at 2 pm, 5 Cask Ales from Brew Your Cask Off will be featured for sampling for a small fee.

Admission to Sweetwater 420 Fest is free. If you want to consume beer, then you will need to purchase a $5 wristband. A portion of the proceeds from the wristband sales are donated to Candler Park Pride and neighborhood.

Promising a great selection of beers from local Atlanta brewers and breweries along with a select group of additional breweries from around the country, some of the craft beers featured at the 2011 festival were from breweries: Wild Heaven, Red Brick, Sweetwater, Terrapin , Magic Hat, New Belgium, Samuel Adams, Peak Organic, Southern Tier, Yuengling and Abita.

Although this Atlanta Beer Festival has passed for 2011, the Atlanta Winter Beer Fest may be worth checking out in 2012. Their website.

Weyerbacher Tiny Belgian Style Imperial Stout

Weyerbacher Tiny label reads Belgian-Style Imperial Stout and is described as a velvety concoction excites your senses with bottomless roasted, earthy and vinous notes. At 11.8%, the taste is extremely bold and very dry with a bit of an alcohol bite. Watch out ladies, this is not for the light hearted. If you don’t like a beer that gives a taste punch, this beer is not for you!

Personally, my opinion is back off the alcohol a bit and let the taste be bold and dry without the alcohol bite. For an American brewery, Weyerbacher tends to brew many Belgian style beers which is one of our favorites however, most of our favorite Belgian beers are actually made in Belgium.

Youngs Double Chocolate Stout

Young’s Double Chocolate Stout is a black colored stout beer made with a combination of chocolate malt and real dark chocolate. Providing a rich, bold flavor with a hint of sweet chocolate at 5.2% alcohol, this stout is one of Kim Wolfe’s favorite. So perfect, I’m enjoying it on Valentine’s day.

Heavy Seas Smoke on the Water is an Imperial Smoked Porter at 8% alcohol. Smoke on the Water is black in color with a rich malty flavor then complimented by an ending smoke flavor. This is a good twist on a porter beer if you are fan of dark beers.

Hey everyone! Feel free to join us next week for an informal Beer Brew Girls meetup at the Square Pub. The Square Pub is a fairly new pub located in the square of Decatur, Georgia, just next to Mac McGee’s. Not all of us have been to the Square Pub yet so this is a great chance to come try it out for yourself if you haven’t as well. As usual, we’ll be talking about their beer selection (and if it’s good or bad), life and whatever else is on our minds. It is possbile we will talk about how to grow Beer Brew Girls to reach more women and beer in 2011.

Beer Brew Girls give Asheville, North Carolina “Eight Thumbs Up!”

So our first take of Asheville was rather impressive and cool thanks to Sherida within the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau. We started a twitter conversation with Sherida just a couple of days before our visit to Asheville. She asked us to stop by the Asheville Visitors Center where she would leave a gift for us behind. Not having any clue on what to expect, we entered the visitors center thinking we would get a bag with some maps and such. Sherida went far beyond our expectations to include a bag full of promotional item goodies including an Asheville branded pint glass, exploration tips and passes, and so much more! Each bag even had a custom tag on each bag that said “Kimmie Wolfe & Friends, www.BeerBrewGirls.com”.  How cool is this? All four of us were completely blown away!

A  HUGE thank you to Sherida within the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau for welcoming the Beer Brew Girls to Asheville, North Carolina!

As this entire review is rather lengthy, here’s a quick list of the places we visited all in 1 day:

Nine Mile

Our  next stop was Nine Mile restaurant, located off of Montford Avenue, for some grub (food) and beer. We were very anxious to start tasting the local beers and knew good food was in order to keep us going through what would be a long yet fun day ahead of us.

At Nine Mile, the beer selection satisfied us and the food was phenomenally tasty! We didn’t want to have left overs to carry around so we ordered 2 dishes and an appetizer for all of us to share. From the lunch menu, we devoured the: Nine Mile (Signature dish), Raggy Road and the Homely Hummus. Nine Mile certainly has established there own flavors and style of cuisine which are unique, deliciously editable and pair up great with beer!

Here’s what we ordered for beer:

• Oatmeal Porter | American Porter | Highland Brewing Company
  • A personal favorite. A dark beer black in color with a big malty, roasted flavor. “Yum. Yum”
• Hurricane Hefeweizen | German Hefeweizen | Foothills Brewing Company
  • Although it was drinkable, it was not a favorite. A light beer in color and taste with somewhat of a watery citrusy taste.
  • Some of us seemed to like this beer.
• Oberon Ale | American Wheat Ale | Bell’s Brewery
  • We really liked this beer. An light beer in color with a zesty vibrant taste – a little spicy and fruity at the same time.

Bruisin Ales

Bruisin’ Ales is a beer haven or heaven we should say. Wall to wall beer – all types from many different makers with a great variety of high alcohol (gravity) ranges! Staff was friendly and tastings of a featured beer on tap were available for a couple of bucks. As we knew whatever we purchased here we would have to keep up with all day, Kimmie decided to buy 1 particular beer that caught her interest for a souvenir. It was a tall bottle wrapped up in white paper. It looked pretty fancy! This beer happened to be a Van De Korevnvan De Korennar Fi ? Kimmie remembers something about it being a Belgian triple ale. While we were here, staff was friendly and made sure to give us plenty of stickers to take home. Within the conversation, Rebecca of Bruisin’ Ales recommended the LAB (Lexington Avenue Brewery) to us. So Kimmie bought her $14 + bottle of beer souvenir and stickers and we all headed to the LAB.

We walked into the packed out LAB (Lexington Avenue Brewery) and found some empty seats on the right side of the bar. We were excited and stoked as this was our 3rd beer adventure and we were thirsty! Kathe and Iris ordered two rounds of flights and the bartender said, “We are not serving flights. It too busy for flights right now.” Disappointed with this response, we unanimously decided to keep going and venture beers elsewhere. Needless to say, we really don’t have good review or even a review for this place.

As we left, we accidentally left Kimmie’s $14 souvenir under the bar on the floor. When we later realized we left it, we called the bar to see if the “package” was still there and the answer was “no”. So whoever discovered the brown package with a white paper covered beer surprise, hope you enjoyed it!

Update: This was posted on November 12th. On November 15th, we received a direct email from Patrick Healy of Lexington Avenue Brewery:

Dear Beer Brew Girls,

I was horrified and angry at the experience you had at the Lexington Avenue Brewery during your recent visit. There is absolutely no excuse for the treatment you received, and you may be sure that our bar tenders will hear about it. Our Brew Master, Ben Pierson, had this to say: “We certainly can do better than this. I understand we were busy, that is not an acceptable excuse and I am sure it is not our policy. We’ve got to earn the business every single day. I am sure inquiries will be made.” Please do come back again and we will personally take care of you.

Thirsty Monk

Beer Brew Girls in Thirsty Monk Belgian Bar

Now off to the Thirsty Monk Belgian Bar. As we walked up to this location, there was a guy dressed up as monk robe clothing. We walked in ready and thirsty for another beer, especially a Belgian one. In finding our way through the first floor bar area, we notice the chalk drawn sign (directly on the door) that said the Belgian bar is “downstairs and to the left!”. Once we ventured downstairs, we found a neat little cozy pub style place. The bar seats were all taken and they even had some tables which were all packed initially. One side of the bar wall was filled with tons of different Belgian beer tap  handles used at one time or another. The menu had about 10 – 12 different draft belgians on tap. We ended up snagging a table to sit and stayed here for awhile as enjoyed our beers! The staff and other fellow beer drinkers were friendly and all happy to be enjoying a good Belgian beer!

Kimmie is the only one that remembers what she had.

• Kimmie | La Terrible from Unibroue | Belgian Strong Dark Ale
  • Careful, this one is pretty potent at 10.5%. A dark beer dark brown to black in color with notes of dark fruits and sweetness.

ABC (Asheville Brewing Company)

We left the Thirsty Monk and headed to ABC (Asheville Brewing Company). Here were happy to to be tasting some homeade beers of Asheville! And they even served us flights. 6 beer samples for $5. What a great value! Kimmie was feeling pretty good from her high gravity Unibroue La Terrible from Thirsty Monk, so she and Iris shared a flight. Kathe and Jill both ordered flights of their own.

It was actually very kool how they brought the flights out to you. Since there were 9 – 10 different beers to choose from for a flight, each flight had a labeled sample guide to help you identify what you ordered and what you were drinking. Kimmie thought this was clever and provided for less confusion all around!

Dirty Jacks Bar

Dirty Jacks Bar is the actual brewery for local Green Man Brewing Company. Small bar, friendly staff, great local people at the bar, and great beer! Dirty Jacks was off the beaten path of the traffic from Bele Chere and proved to be our favorite beer stop of the day! We even hit this place twice in our 1 beer venture day!!

All Kimmie remembers at this point is having the famous shrimp and grits. I’m still savoring this dish a few months later…..

All in all, Asheville, North Carolina is one of the best beer cities we’ve been to so far. We look forward to going back and venturing more of Asheville’s beer scene soon!

We do brew our own beer but we drink lots of craft beers as well. Here’s a seasonal craft beer make from our Athens, Georgia based beer brewery. This 2010 Milk Chocolate Milk Stout seasonal beer is made with cocoa nibs and shells from Olive and Sinclair Chocolate Company. The label has the Terrapin Turtle dressed up in a cow costume on a farm which is pretty hilarious! Terrapin’s Moo Hoo is a great seasonal beer addition to their beer line and will have you mooing after a few sips. Yummy yummy!

• Waller will be providing us with some feet stomping music at our event! Waller is a 3 person band group composed of Jason C. Waller, song writer and vocalist, back up vocalist Tiffany Leigh and bass player, Joel Glogowski. Playing music known to make your feet stomp, Waller’s music roots are heavily influenced by the country stylings of John Prine, Hank Williams, and the mountains of the southeast.Waller and BIG CITY THINKING are proud to present Waller’s new 7-song record, My Poor Queen EP, with a CD release show happening the night before our event.

Alex Krug Trio

• Alex Krug Trio, a band straight from Asheville, North Carolina, will be performing November 20th at the Beer Brew Girls 2nd Tasting.This Americana Folk rock band consist of Alex Krug (lead singer, Acoustic and Taylor guitarist), Ashely Cofield (the violinist), and Kevin Lampson who plays upright bass. Ashley and Alex have been playing together for less than 2 years with Kevin joining them this past September.When asked about what their lyrics consist of, Alex said a fan recently told her that their music was “spacious and psychedelic”. Alex went into depth about how their music is non-specific, how she wants room for the listener to apply their own experience to their music. She called it an “emotional landscape”- carrying you to this mystical pool that transcends you emotionally. Alex has been compared to the voice and acoustic playing of Beth Orton, the passion of Janis Joplin, and writing talent to the earlier Dave Matthews when he first came to America.

  You can find Alex Krug Trio at different venues around Asheville, NC, I-tunes, or even in your next party for a reasonable fee.

  It was such a colorful experience to chat with Alex about her, and her passion for music. She explained in detail how different musicians have influenced her in different chapters in her life, such as Edie Brickell, Natalie merchant (Venus Back live album), and Tori Amos.

Beer Brew Girls’ home brewed beer, Body Snatcher, has won first place in it’s category in a local home brew competition, 2010 Strong Beer Competition. This is Beer Brew Girls first winning award and we are totally stoked! Can we get a whoop whoop?!!

We entered a total of 2 beers into the 2010 Strong Beer Competition put on by Final Gravity Craftbrewers, an Atlanta, Georgia homebrew club group. Body Snatcher at 9% alchohol won first place in the Belgian Strong Golden category. Double Black Bean Stout at 13% alchohol did not place in this competition.

This particular Atlanta homebrew competition is only for beers 8% in alcohol or higher and the beers are judged by the homebrew guidelines set by the American Homebrewers Association.

This award winning Belgian Strong Golden ale known as “Body Snatcher” features sweet maltiness aroma  characters – like wildflower honey to please your nose sense. The pour gives away to a big rocky white head and nice lace to please your eye sight. The bready malt with honey floral character and smooth alcohol dry finish is sure to please your taste buds. The 1st place award winning ribbon for this beer sure does please us!

2nd Tastings and Networking Event - Winter Style

It’s time again for our 2nd “Tasting and Networking Event – Winter Style” by yours truly, the BEER BREW GIRLS! This shindig on Saturday, November 20, 2010 is setting the mood of the season with home brew tastings to include dark beers, pale ales, belgian beers and more. On top of 13 great beers for your tastebuds, Beer Brew Girls and peeps will be providing the food too. That’s right! You don’t have to worry about bringing a dish this time. Beer Brew Girls August 2010 Meetup at Terrapin Beer Takeover at Leon's Full Service

Beer Brew Girls ventured out to Leon’s Full Service in Decatur along with the rest of Decatur’s beer lovers! Oh what fun we had! We met up with some great Beer Brew Girls, met new people and ventured with good beers down the Terrapin Brewery Lane!

All 14 draft lines at Leon’s Full Service were nothing but the best from Terrapin Beer Company. The beer feature of the evening was the new release of  Hopzilla Double IPA. Along with Hopzilla, these Terrapin beers were offered: 2010 Reunion Beer, Captain Krunkles, 2009 Big Hoppy Monster, Big Sloppy Monster, Substance Abuse, Monk’s Revenge, Gammay Ray, Rye Squared, Hopsecutioner, Rye Pale, Golden Ale, Sunray Wheat, and Hop Karma. On top of the tap list, these bottles of Terrapin were available as well: Terrapin-DeProef Monstre Rouge, Boom Shakalager, Georgia Theatre Iron Tankard and Georgia Theatre Double Feature.

A special thanks to “Tim” of Leon’s! Tim graciously supplied us with tastings of some darker beers by Terrapin including: 2009 Wake and Bake Coffee Oatmeal Stout, 2010 Wake and Bake Coffee Oatmeal Stout, Depth Charge and Substance Abuse. Yum yum!

We had the pleasure of meeting some great people this evening. We officially met Tim of Leon’s who knew we were coming from Facebook! We met up with Lee of the Brickstore Pub who told us about the Brickstore cellar and the beer that will be for sale soon. We met Mary Jane Mahan, the author of the book “Love at the Pub” and even got our own autographed copy of her book! We even saw one of the owners of the Brickstore Pub, Dave Blanchard, at the bar enjoying the Terrapin tap lines himself.

All in all, Beer Brew Girls had a great time! Here are the rest of the photos!

Cheers and Have Fun at the first ever Heritage Sandy Springs Beer Fest!

After 2 previous attempts of trying to making this “Belgian Pale Ale”, we are determined to get it right for the 3rd time. Our last batch of this beer tasted more like an Anchor Steam by Anchor Brewing from San Franscisco, CA which is personally not our favorite type of beer.  If we don’t get this Belgian Pale Ale beer right this time, we may not attempt this homebrew make anymore!

So keep your fingers crossed that this one turns out! Cheers!

We were recently contacted by Joe Grizzle of Ale Raisers Homebrewing here in Georgia. He has this fantastic custom made professional home brewery, all-grain system for sale. If we only had $4,000, we would totally snatch this home brew system up! He’s moving soon and needs to sell this very soon. If he can’t sell it, then he’s planning to take the system apart and sell it in pieces off of ebay. That would be an absolute shame! Buy this beer home brew system if you can! (And hurry, he will be taking apart really soon!!!)

System Features

We have to say we attended the 2010 East Atlanta Beer Fest and we had an absolute blast. We went with some friends we know, we saw people we knew and met a lot of people we didn’t know. And of course, we consumed a very large amount of beer! I think I can vouch for everyone in our group that attended last year’s East Atlanta Beer Festival 2009, that we had just as good of a time this year if not even better!

IMPROVEMENTS MADE THIS YEAR | NEW LOCATION AND REGULAR SIZE PINT GLASS

From a review stand point, there were some improvements made from 2009 and some things that still need working on. 1 major improvement was the location. The 2010 beer fest was held in East Atlanta Village’s Brownwood Park compared to the 2009 location of an abandoned elementary school lot / grounds. The Brownwood Park was great! There was lots of shade for a warm humid day. There seemed to be more room to escape the crowd when you needed a break. The space was ample enough to handle the crowd and still provide room for the vendors, the VIP area, the “restrooms” and people who brought camper chairs to sit and chill.

A 2nd improvement was made by bringing the full size pint glass souvenir back. In 2009, we were given the small 4 – 6 oz tasting glasses. We personally did not have a problem with them but I guess they had full size pint glasses in 2008 (which we did not attend) and other beer attendees complained about this. The not so good thing about the full size pint glass is it was not given to you to taste in. At entry, you were given a small plastic tasting cup and a ticket to claim your pint glass upon exit of the festival. Cool right? Not exactly. The plastic cups did not hold up very well. Upon entry, one of our girls received a cracked cup as she walked in. Fortunately, she turned around immediately and the staff gave her a new cup.  Toward the end of the fest, probably 4 hours or so later, we did have one in our party crack her glass. We had people approach us at the porta potties wanting our cups since they broke theirs and we appeared to have extra cups. It wasn’t really clear to the drunk guy that we were holding our friends cups while they were relieving themselves! But at some point, one of our girls had a stack of cups that she left in the porta potty. She went back to the porta potty to retrieve them and they were gone! Needless to say, we didn’t last much longer without cups but it was probably for the best as we were pretty toasted by this point anyway! We all did manage to keep up with our glass ticket and all did receive our glasses as we left the festival. We pretty much opened the festival at 1 pm (we were there around noon to be first in line) and we left close to 6 pm!

BEER REVIEWS AND NEW DISCOVERIES

We did discover some new beers! Our reviews below only include 1 word because well, we just decided to keep it easy on ourselves! Look for these next time your at the beverage store!

• Belgian White – Really Good – This one is described as “whitty”
• Pale Ale – Real Good Too – This one is described as “bubbly” (for a pale ale)
• Also look for Steven’s Point: Black Ale, Cascade and Lager

• Organic beer (that’s actually very good)!
• Organic Chocolate – “Yum”
• Also look for Bison’s: Organic Imperial Brown, Organic Gingerbread and Organic IPA

• Fairly new beer release here in Atlanta
• Rapsberry Wheat – “Yummy”
• Also look for Southern Tier’s: IPA and Phin & Matts

• Can we say wow! Greatest new discovery of the day!
• Summer – “Soda” (Blueberry flavored and limited time release. If you find this, buy it up while you can! It’s very refreshing….)
• Also look for Woodchuck Cider’s: Amber, Granny Smith and Pear

I’M NOT THE ONLY BEER NERD

It was my (Kimmie’s) idea to print out the beer list for us since they do not include a beer list at entry. I’m very glad we did because it helped us in the madness to figure out where we wanted to go next. And I was not the only one that did this! When I ran into this random guy above to see his printed beer list and he saw mine, he said something about us being nerds since we printed out our own list!

For the festival, I would recommend they start providing beer lists for all at entry. I just happened to print out some extras to give away to random people and they were gone in the first hour of festival.

Beer Brew Girls Lady Pants Label with Original Drawing From Ruth Schowalter

RuthTruth known as Ruth Schowalter is a local Decatur, Georgia artist who enjoys combining drawing of lines and feminism to create original one of a kind “beer girls” for our beers. We met Ruth at our First Beer Brew Girls Tasting and Networking party. It was at this party Ruth expressed interest and inspiration as an artist to draw female characters for our beers. Since then we have seen some initial sketches for some of our previous beer names such as: Black Bean Stout, Three Nipple Tripple and the one pictured above, Lady Pants.

If you have not attended any of the Decatur Beer Festivals in the past, then you’ve been missing out. The Decatur Beer Festival is a fun place to be and is a beer success every year. This festival does limit the ticket entries to 4000 people. Last year for the 2009 Decatur Beer Festival, we, the Beer Brew Girls, did attend  and we had a great time! But we missed out on the 2008 Decatur Beer Festival because we waited too long to purchase tickets. So don’t be that victim!

The date for the 2010 Beer Festival is Saturday, October 16, 2010 from noon – 5 pm. The tickets for this year’s 2010 beer fest are stated to go on sale sometime in September 2010. Mark your calendars now. The tickets are $35 for each person and well worth every penny. From Chimay to Abita to Tommy Knocker to Southampton to New Belgium to many others, the Decatur Beer Festival has everything under the sun and is located in a great city to go sober up (eat) afterwards!

Incase you didn’t know, every Thursday night is “pint night” at Taco Mac locations. Buy a featured beer of the month and get a free pint glass! It’s that simple. Of course, us Beer Brew Girls LOVE pint nights at Taco Mac. Featuring all different kinds of craft beers and usually more than 1 beer a month, we get to explore new tastes and rekindle tastes we’ve had before. This month for May 2010, there are 3 different featured beers of the month which are: Widmer Brothers Drop Top Amber Ale, Kona Brewing Fire Rock Pale Ale and Shock Top Belgian White. Most of us in our group tried the Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale and it was pretty good. Although it had a mild hoppy smell, it did have more of a hoppy taste which we expect pale ales to have. One of our group members did try the Widmer Amber Ale and we forgot to get her opinion on that.

So here are pictures of us throughout our pint night adventure at Taco Mac! We’re a bunch of crazies (in case you can’t tell by the pics!)

This weekend is the Dunwoody Beer Festival: Hops For Hope. Happening Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Perimeter Mall, this year is the 9th annual festival which is a benefit to support Camp Twin Lakes, a not-for-profit organization that offers year-round recreational, therapeutic, and educational programs for children facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges. All the proceeds from this event go to Camp Twin Lakes. Although this is a beer festival out of several beer festivals in Atlanta, this festival will also feature liquors and cocktails as well. From 2 – 7 pm, sample over 150 different, malt beverages and liquors all from different places around the world. With different beers, liquor cocktails, music and food vendors, this is a sure place to have a great time with great friends and support a good cause at the same time!

Back in February, we brewed an American Pale Ale in gear up for our April 10th Networking and Tastings party. We named it “Lives of the Monster Dogs” after the band that played that night! We ended up just nicknaming this beer Monster Dog for shorter length. Needless to say, out of 40 something bottles of it, we are down to only 2 bottles left.This beer was 1 of our top rated beers that evening and was a really big hit!

Since it was such a great hit and we are practically out of it, we made this one again. The first Monster Dog started out mildly hoppy since it was dry hopped in a secondary fermentation for 1 week. But over time, the hop taste has somewhat disappeared starting with a mild hop taste and smell but leaving a really malty taste behind. Although some of us really like the big malty finish, Brewmaster Kathe, does not want this batch to be as malty on the finish after this beer develops over time. So with this batch, Kathe added some additional hops in the wort boil compared to the last batch. After a 2 – 3 weeks in the first fermenation, Monster Dog will be dry hopped in the secondary fermentation for 2 weeks instead of just 1 week.

For this Brew Saturday, our Beer Brew Girl Tina came out to learn the process in hopes to start brewing for herself.

A 10% American Pale Ale? Leave it to the Beer Brew Girls to create something like this. Yesterday, Saturday, May 8th, we moved the “Lady Pants” American Pale Ale to a secondary fermentation where it is being dry hopped. In the process of the moving the beer, we took gravity and figured it out to be approx. 10% alcohol content. To be exact, we figured 10.2% but we’ll just say 10% to allow a small margin for reading error and/or miscalculation. We tasted this Lady Pants to see if it had an alcohol bite. Surprisingly enough, it tasted very smooth and gives a nice warm and fuzzy feeling going down. So even though we missed the target alcohol percentage by 3% (originally should have been around 6% alcohol), we think this beer will be enjoyed!

As a wedding gift, Lady Pants is now in a secondary fermentation being dry hopped with various fresh hops. This beer will dry hop for 1 week and then we will bottle it so it’s ready for the wedding date!

What’s unique to this competition is newly added category for new home brewers!  Brewers who have not been home brewing longer than 1year can enter this special category created just for them.

We have not decided if we are going to enter a beer into this competition. We would apply for the new hombrewer category for sure.

  Brewmasters Warehouse is one of our newly discovered treasures (and perhaps our favorite so far) located right here in Marietta, Georgia. We stumbled upon this store after we were not able to get the exact ingredients we wanted from another local store. Since then, we have found that this place offers really fresh ingredients for all grain beer home brewing at really competitive prices (cheaper than the other 2 local stores listed below). If you are in Georgia, you can order your items online and choose the “pickup in store” option. If you are not in Georgia then don’t worry folks. Brewmasters Warehouse offers a flat rate of $6.99 for most items in 48 states of the U.S. Some restrictions do apply – see website for details.

  Beer Brew Girls Recommend Beer Necessities for Instore Guidance and Assistance

  Beer Necessities is where we bought our homebrew starter kit and a good portion of our supplies so we are still partial to this store. Located in Alpharetta, Georgia, most of the staff here are very knowledgable in home brewing. We are partial to one employee, Josh, who sold us our starter kit with our first extract kit and helped guide us through our learning experiences of brewing. Beer Neccessities is a great place to go instore and get some one on one interaction and guidance when you have questions or need assistance. We are not sure if they do a lot of shipping though. They may although their website seems outdated to what supplies they have in the store, the shopping cart doesn’t seem very friendly and the message “New Website Coming… Visit Again Soon!” has been on the website for quite sometime now. So online ordering is not really our recommendation for this store but in store one on one help is.

  Hop City Craft Beer and Wine is a really great place to discover new and reconnect with old craft beers. Their selection of craft beers is probably one of the best in Atlanta compared to other beverage stores here in the area. They only sell craft beers and wines, no liquor. Hop City also carries home brewing supplies. The Beer Brew Girls have only bought a few items from this department of their store because they are expensive in comparison to the other stores listed above. However, we have sunk plenty of money into their craft beer side of their business because they are always offering something new and hot off the brewery shelf or newly distributed shelf!

Atlanta Beer Week - Discover Your Craft Beers

This year is the first year for an official “Atlanta Beer Week”. It is during this week many great beer bars, beer stores, pubs, restaurants, brewpubs and breweries in the Atlanta area will be celebrating the many different wonderful beers available from all over the globe by offering special events, deals and even special beer releases. Currently special events include special cask tappings, special beer dinners, free beer tastings, acoustic sunset performance, beer based cocktails and more from local Atlanta places you know: Brick Store Pub, 5 Seasons Brewery, The Marlay House, Max Lager’s just to name a few!

East Atlanta Beer Festival 2009 Great Staff

I personally, Kim Wolfe, don’t remember every beer I tried and didn’t try but I do remember having Duvel which is one of my commonly preferred beers to have during the week and weekend. I do remember some cool beer hats and beer accessories people were wearing. I also remember the lines to the porta potties seemed to get longer and longer as the day went by (surprise surprise). For the 2009 event, we did purchase our tickets in advance. As we waiting in what seemed to the be a 2 – 3 mile long line to enter in festival, we remember someone coming down the line saying “Gate tickets are sold out! If you don’t already have tickets, then sorry, we are sold out!”.

So if you plan on going to this year’s 2010 festival, then we highly recommend you purchase your tickets online now. Here are the details for you:

Beer Brew Girls Home Brew Saturday 4/24/10 Lady Pants

Here, the Beer Brew Girls team, are brewing a American Pale Ale for a wedding happening soon. The brides to be were asked to name their beer and “Lady Pants” was declared. Apparently, it’s kind of an inside joke thing between them two but it’s also somewhat appropriate for our beer names!

This American Pale Ale is being brewed all-grain by our brew master’s created all grain mash tun and rollable setup. Today we boil it with hops and such for the first fermentation process. In a few weeks, we will move it to the secondary fermentation process and dry hop it for additional hop flavors and aroma.

Beer Brew Girls at Sweetwater 420 Fest 2010

Last Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, 2010, was the annual Sweetwater 420 Fest. The Beer Brew Girls all  represented our new group this year sporting our branded BBG shirts. Last year for the 2009 festival, we hadn’t even started brewing yet so we attended just as solo beer drinkers representing me, myself and us.  We can see that it’s getting bigger and better every year so far.

The idea of this festival is based on 2 primary things: creating education and awareness for taking care of our precious mother earth and drinking good beer. With Sweetwater Brewery being a local brewer in Atlanta, it’s easy to fall in love with festival. There’s always plenty to see with a growing artist market that showcases art of all kinds including using recycled products and things. There’s always plenty of beer to drink with 4 -5 main beer selections at the main beverage stands located all throughout Candler Park. There’s always plenty of music to hear with bands playing all day on both days of the festival. And there’s always plenty of people to meet and run into (sometimes literally) who are there enjoying the good things of this festival just as you are.

This year, the festival took over larger space in Candler Park, Atlanta, with a larger artist market, the main stage and a smaller stage for 2 music place options and a cool portable bar which housed the cask ale samples made available on Sunday from 2pm – 4pm. Although the tastings were $2 each for a small sample, the selections of the beer were all diverse and unique in their own way. For the regular size servings, we tried Sweetwater’s new brew coming out, SchWheat Unfiltered American Wheat. Then we ventured with Sweetwater’s IPA which I’m sure we’ve had before this day but seemed to taste extra specially good on this day. Plenty of beer magazine vendors were out promoting their reads. Then one of the beer brew girls just happened to pick up a copy of Draft Magazine which she later lost to the porta-potty. As much as she was looking forward to reading this magazine, she decided she was not going after it then.

Although this festival is beer and environmentally green education oriented, this is a festival where you can bring the family  including kids and pets. We  would recommend families come earlier say around 11am or noon since as the day goes on, the crowd seems to roll in and the festival gets really  packed out!

So here’s our picture journey of the Sunday we went. You’ll notice towards the end of the day, Beer Brew Girls ended up following the yellow  brick road!

So here are some last minute details you must know:

1. LIMITED PARKING!
   • Carpool with others if you can!
   • Due to our neighborhood layout, parking is very limited.
   • Please be considerate and do not block driveways.
2. DO NOT PARK in the end of street circle  – You will get towed!
   • There are 2 circles in our neighborhood.
     • One is close to the entrance and will be on your left. You can park in here ok
     • The other circle is at the very end of Wilson’s Crossing past our house. You cannot park here since this is an emergency zone and is the designated place for emergency vehicles to turn around in the case they have to get in our neighborhood.
     • Signs will be up and clearly visible so you know which circle we are referring to!

Beer Brew Girls Homebrew Batch Black Czar

For Saturday, March 27, 2010, we made an all-grain “Black CZAR” beer which is a Russian Imperial Stout recipe and added some extra special ingredients for what will be become a chocolate, coffee imperial stout. This beer will be high in alcohol and will require at least 6 months to a year before it’s ready for sampling. Brewmaster, Kathe, intentionally made this beer in the beginning of Spring so we may be able to enjoy it next Winter. Brewmaster, Kathe, and Brew Assistant, Kimmie, also got a work out with the latest beer gadget – a grain mill. This beer will the be the first of the freshest since we crushed our own grains.

Stephen Everett and Whitney Sloan Smith are extra special Beer Brew Girls people to meet because Stephen is Kimmie’s brother. Stephen is currently in Graduate School at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. He is obtaining a double masters in landscape architecture and community planning and will be graduating in 2013. With his current school learnings, Stephen has really tapped into his artistic abilities and style this past year. Stephen and Kimmie’s parents are both articulate and artistic with our dad, Todd Everett, graduating and working in the drafting field for years and now owns his own business specializing in vehicle related enhancements including headlight restoration: LenzWizard.com and our mom, Wendy Everett, who makes one of a kind handbags and purses and sells them at: SatinDollHandbags.com.

Whitney Sloan Smith is Stephen’s girlfriend who is also attending Auburn University with a major in accounting and an eye for creative business. She is a notable artist and painter with works appearing in the annual Auburn Art Walk and has been featured as a product model.

Maya Gupta earned her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Georgia, where her research focused on the connections between animal abuse and domestic violence. She currently serves as President of Ahimsa House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people and pets across Georgia escape domestic violence together. (Ahimsa is a Sanskrit principle meaning “nonviolence”.) Prior to joining the board of Ahimsa House, Maya founded the Magi-Cat Adoption Network rescue in Athens, Georgia, and was involved in the rehabilitation and retraining of Thoroughbred racehorses. She lives in Kirkwood with her partner George and their three and a half cats.

Tracy Holbrook is a faithful fan and client of Kim Wolfe’s art (aka Kimmie’s art) owning a Decatur City Limits and an Atlanta City Limits. Tracy Holbrook and June Torrance are friends, neighbors and both involved in the PTA at Oakhurst Elementary in Decatur. Look for them at the event to chat about Oakhurst’s biggest fundraisers of the year: the annual raffle and online and live auctions. They’re still looking for donations so let them know if you have products or services you’d like to advertise in the auction. June will also be ready to talk beer as her husband is an avid home brewer with a two tap kegerator in their home office.
